My Usborne Experience in Witney, Oxford – A Journey Behind the Books
Some professional experiences become truly unforgettable because they change the way you see the world behind the work you admire. My visit to the Usborne event in Witney, Oxford, UK, was one of those experiences.
I had the incredible opportunity and privilege to attend this event at the invitation of Gabriela Rusu, an extraordinary leader whose achievements are deeply inspiring. Over the years, she has built a team of more than 800 Usborne partners — a remarkable accomplishment, especially considering the challenges we face in Romania, such as customs taxes and the fact that English is not our native language.
Yet through perseverance, passion and vision, Gabriela now sits alongside top UK team leaders, contributing to discussions about education, books and the future of learning. For me, this was a powerful reminder that dedication and purpose can transcend limitations.
Discovering the Story Behind the Books
One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was the opportunity to discover what truly happens behind the scenes at Usborne.
We were given a genuine sneak peek into the process of creating the books and had the privilege of interacting with the people who bring them to life. We also had the chance to hear about upcoming releases, which are absolutely sensational and incredibly innovative.
What impressed me most was the extraordinary level of care and precision involved in every stage of production. Some books take up to two years to create. Every detail is analysed carefully — from the educational content and illustrations to the interaction design, safety standards and even the physical durability of the books over time.
I was fascinated to learn that many books are tested extensively, especially those designed for babies and young children, ensuring both safety and long-lasting quality. Nothing is accidental. Every page reflects deep thought, creativity and responsibility.
The People Behind Usborne
Perhaps the most emotional and inspiring aspect of the visit was meeting the people behind the books.
I had the honour of speaking with individuals who have worked at Usborne for more than 30 years. In today’s world, that level of commitment is extraordinary and says so much about the culture and values of the company.
Their passion was truly moving. They did not speak about books as products, but as meaningful educational experiences capable of shaping childhood, curiosity and imagination.
I could feel how their destinies had become intertwined over decades through a shared mission: creating books that inspire children to explore, think, dream and learn. Their creativity, dedication and collaboration have strengthened one another over the years, building not only exceptional books, but also an exceptional educational legacy.
There is something deeply powerful about meeting people who genuinely believe in what they create. That passion is present everywhere at Usborne.
Why Usborne Books Matter So Much
Usborne books are far more than educational materials. They become part of family life.
Parents read them together with their children in the earliest stages of development, creating connection, trust and emotional warmth. Later, children return to the same books independently, discovering new meanings and perspectives as they grow.
Encyclopedias, for example, are books children revisit for years. The content remains valuable, but their understanding evolves with age, maturity and curiosity.
This is what makes Usborne books such a remarkable investment for a child’s development: they grow together with the child.
From sensory books for babies to STEM activities, literature, interactive books and encyclopedias, every title is designed to stimulate curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love for learning.
And perhaps one of the most beautiful things is that adults are fascinated by them too.
A Deep Sense of Gratitude
I left this experience feeling inspired, grateful and emotionally enriched.
Grateful for the opportunity to learn directly from extraordinary people.
Grateful for the passion and excellence behind every Usborne book.
And grateful for the reminder that education created with love, purpose and vision can truly impact generations.
Thank you, Gabriela Rusu, for the invitation, the inspiration and for building bridges that allow others to experience this extraordinary world behind the books.
